Wow what a day!

The following takes place between 2245 and 2300…OK…for those of us who got hooked on 24 last year today was the big day! It was a great day at FT Jackson! 5 young soldiers came to faith in Christ at our morning service. I got to counsel 17 soldiers this afternoon the Panthers won and 24 was premiering tonight! Can I hear you say a “banner day!” It seems that the devil had his sights set on my day of days. Just at the end of the most excellent of days, I’m tuned in with anticipation to the last 10 minutes of 24. The fate of the world hangs in the balance. Jack Bauer is once again in the middle of an impossible scenario. How will he get out of this one? The last commercial comes on and right when the closing scene approaches what happens? My local news decides to preempt the last 10 minutes! WHAT?!!!! Yes, they did. Instead of heart pounding intrigue I got a local story about some trees that blew down in some guys back yard! Oh brother! So I called home and Tammy narrated the last scene to me over the phone. I guess it’s the next best thing to being there!
All kidding aside, the best part of my day was seeing people find Jesus, find life and find truth. No TV show could ever compete with the Power of God. No cliffhanger could ever replace that moment just as the invitation to life with Christ is given. Unlike TV shows the story of the Gospel is life and death. Its as real as it gets and praise Him for His continued work in our midst. Thank you all for praying! Hope everybody has a great week.

That's some righteous anger, Brother! Righteous anger! But seriosly, yesterday was a great day. You preached an excellent, appropriate sermon and I commend you for your willingness to counsel so many soldiers - monstrous Kingdom impact!

What is 24? Who are the Panthers? But the God of creation I know! And He is faithful to fulfill all things! Praise Him for my new brothers and sisters in Christ!

Let them know we're rejoicing in Statesville over them.

Another fan of 24 here - didn't watch SUnday night because I was watching a TIVO'd Panthers game with some buddies. So the wife and I watched all four episodes on Monday night. Great TV!

My wife asked a great question - who would win in a battle between Jack Bauer and Batman? Not the silly Batman of the 1960s TV show but the real Batman of the comic books - the one that took down the entire JLA!

I have my opionion!

One year out- Remembering Dale Beatty

I looked down the hallway at Walter Reed Hospital and saw a Veteran in his late 30s being pushed in a wheel chair. At first, it was just a normal sight at Walter Reed to see someone missing legs, but then I noticed a familiar crooked grin and a familiar hat atop his head. The hat read, Purple Heart Homes and the smile meant that it was my friend Dale Beatty. He didn't recognize me in my Army uniform and clean shaven. I looked down at him as we both waited for an elevator and I said sarcastically, "Hey son, what do you know about Purple Heart Homes?" He looked up at me and said, "I'm the co-founder and we do critical home repair for disabled Veterans!" The excitement in his voice was contagious. I smiled back and said, "I know you Dale" Then the reunion began as we rode up in the elevator and for the next 2 hours we continued in conversation, Dale, his wife Belinda and me....just reconnecting. A soldier dispenses his views!

I get to meet and make friends with some hilarious people in the Army. Many could have sob stories that are truly legitimate then others just seem to make the best of things and their situations. My friend Mark was out of the Army in the Individual Ready Reserve for over 12 years. That means he was out, like not ever putting on a uniform. He had a great job, a great wife and a gaggle of kids. But in December he gets a letter in the mail saying, "Welcome back! And oh by the way its involuntary, you are going to Iraq" (my paraphrase). Instead of ducking the mission, instead of griping and complaining, Mark chooses to laugh and make others laugh. I thank God for him and others like him in these trying times. I hope you will as well! Enjoy....by the way, its really hot in Kuwait in case you were wondering!

The songs of life- Thanks to mom

My home was filled with music and people growing up. Mom loved music and can play an assortment of instruments but her favorites are the lap dulcimer and the hammered dulcimer. I'm not certain of when she took up these pieces, but her talent and ear for music made the learning curve much shorter than most. Mom also loves people and there was always someone over at our house playing music and enjoying fellowship. Mom was always having dulcimer parties and with some of her friends played weddings, church events and parties for folks. My favorite was down at my aunt Becky's house just a 1/4 mile from our home. Becky would take the whole month of May to celebrate her birthday and it would culminate with a big party called "The Strawberry Jam". I'm sure there were strawberries there but I was never real sure the origin of the name. Everyone would gather in my aunt's carport, musicians would arrive with instrument cases and chairs.
