I've Been Blogged

This is my first ever blog. I'm not sure what to do, but I'm blogging away. Merry Christmas to all. Christmas is fast approaching. We got Jack an RC car that has an airplane attached to the top. I really hope it works. We have been victims of the "we don't have any more of those" at Wal-Mart. Jack wanted the Tyco RC Terrain Twister. I never actually saw one, so if I did, I wouldn't know what was looking at. Needless to say, we have purchased something close. I have as much fun as he does getting the stuff together for Christmas morning.

Its good to be home for Christmas. I could be in Iraq as many of my friends are. My friend Joseph who stationed at FT Carson Colorado is in the "sandbox" right now. Last week they lost a soldier. As a Chapplain that is when the rubber meets the road in military ministry. I will be mobilized in May to pull a year of duty at FT Jackson SC. It'll be good duty and I'll get to work with some fine young soldiers. The worst part will be being away from Tammy and the kids. Being in the Army has made me appreciate every day. I thank God for each moment with them. They grow so fast.

So Merry Christmas blog world. May the light of the Gospel be seen by all. May the fact that God loved this world, even the worst of us, so much that He came in skin to live, die and resurrect for us. In advent we celebrate His coming both in the stink of a barn and we look forward to His coming again to right all wrongs. May that day be sooner than later. Come quickly Lord Jesus!

One year out- Remembering Dale Beatty

I looked down the hallway at Walter Reed Hospital and saw a Veteran in his late 30s being pushed in a wheel chair. At first, it was just a normal sight at Walter Reed to see someone missing legs, but then I noticed a familiar crooked grin and a familiar hat atop his head. The hat read, Purple Heart Homes and the smile meant that it was my friend Dale Beatty. He didn't recognize me in my Army uniform and clean shaven. I looked down at him as we both waited for an elevator and I said sarcastically, "Hey son, what do you know about Purple Heart Homes?" He looked up at me and said, "I'm the co-founder and we do critical home repair for disabled Veterans!" The excitement in his voice was contagious. I smiled back and said, "I know you Dale" Then the reunion began as we rode up in the elevator and for the next 2 hours we continued in conversation, Dale, his wife Belinda and me....just reconnecting. A soldier dispenses his views!

I get to meet and make friends with some hilarious people in the Army. Many could have sob stories that are truly legitimate then others just seem to make the best of things and their situations. My friend Mark was out of the Army in the Individual Ready Reserve for over 12 years. That means he was out, like not ever putting on a uniform. He had a great job, a great wife and a gaggle of kids. But in December he gets a letter in the mail saying, "Welcome back! And oh by the way its involuntary, you are going to Iraq" (my paraphrase). Instead of ducking the mission, instead of griping and complaining, Mark chooses to laugh and make others laugh. I thank God for him and others like him in these trying times. I hope you will as well! Enjoy....by the way, its really hot in Kuwait in case you were wondering!
